In my last post about recovering after not succeeding on the NPTE, the next question is “What shall I do next?!” After not passing the NPTE, the question whether to continue to study or to take a break will depend on the person and mental state after the exam. After the shock dissipates, a person who has a strong and determined focus can return to studying shortly afterwards. If a person takes the unsuccessful exam much harder both mentally and physically, it would be best to take a break in order to start fresh once again with a clear mind.
Whether someone decides to continue or wait, being able to self-assess what went right and what could improve upon makes a difference for the next exam. For example, those that rush and take the next upcoming exam to keep the momentum but don’t change their study habits, I have seen many times where the end result is the same. So, in order to improve NPTE exam scores, it is best to know – how you prepared and what you can change.
The NPTE is no longer an academic standardized exam and I see many mistakes of studying academically for this clinically based integrated exam. Here’s an example that many participants enter into the program and learn that these methods don’t work or farewell for the exam.
- Reading the study guides cover to cover
- Taking countless practice exams and memorizing the answers
- Memorizing concepts and information
- Procrastinating and cramming
- Not taking the exam serious enough
- Not enough focused studying
- And not having a solid study plan
All of these have resulted in a not so successful score and TEP’s program focuses on how to eliminate these academic study habits and replace them with clinical and practical study habits. By knowing what you can change and how to adapt to new strategies can be insightful and effective.
One major decision factor is how well mentally you can pick yourself up and begin studying again without fear. A setback as not passing does take a toll on someone and if you have taken the exam multiple times, fear can hold someone back drastically until changes are made.
